WHISKEY

Whiskey (or whisky) is a distilled spirit made from fermentation of grain and maturing it in wooden containers for a period of time. To properly drink whiskey, one must sniff it, take a few sips to assess the flavor and enjoy it.

AMERICAN WHISKY / BOURBON WHISKY

America produces a range of fantastic whiskies including the Jack Daniel’s Whisky and the Jack Daniel’s Honey Whisky.

Bourbon whisky is a variant of American Whisky with strict conditions such as it should be made with at least 51% of corn produced in the United States and aged in charred oak barrels for at least two years. Although, it is a popular belief that Bourbon must be made only in Kentucky, that is not true. It can be produced throughout America. Jim Beam is a famous Bourbon!

All American Whisky’s are not bourbon, but all bourbons are American Whisky.

SCOTCH WHISKY

Malted barley is the defining grain of Scotch, the region of production derives from the name in itself, Scotland. The five whisky producing regions of Scotland are The Highlands, The Lowlands, The Isle of Islay, Campbeltown, and Speyside. There are two main categories of scotch – Single Malt and Blended Whisky.

SINGLE MALT WHISKY

For a scotch to be a single malt, it must be distilled at a single distillery in Scotland using only pot still distillation process and of course, must be made from mashed barley, which is then left to mature in oak casks from a minimum of three years. The premium single malts such as Talisker, Cardhu and The Singleton leave their single malt to mature for a minimum of 10 years.

BLENDED WHISKY

Around 90% of whiskies sold in the world are Blended Whisky, containing a mix of grain and single malt whiskies. This includes Johnnie Walker Black Label, Johnnie Walker Red Label, Johnnie Walker White Walker, Famous Grouse, Teacher’s, Cutty Sark, J&B Rare, Grants, Ballantine’s Finest, Vat 69, Passport Scotch, and Chivas Regal among many others.
